St. John’s Anglican Church celebrated is 155 years old this year, 2011. The Rev. William Arthur Johnston began this ministry in 1856 when he gathered together an Anglican Church fellowship for worship and prayer in a local home in Weston.
The Rev. W. A. Johnston eventually built the “Chapel of Ease” which served a dual purpose, a gathering place for Anglican worship and the beginnings of a private boy’s school. Trinity College School, Port Hope, traces it’s origins to this chapel, developing from Father Johnston’s dream of creating a center of education in the northern reaches of Toronto. Later, the Chapel of Ease, pulled by ox cart to its present site, formed the wooden structure of the present day St. John’s Church. The pews are the original pews designed to seat the children of the boy’s school.
Through the years, St. John’s, has responded to the developing and changing community of Weston. In the 1960’s and 1970’s the church served Weston with several services on a Sunday; offering Worship, Sunday School and Christian Education for the many families, children and teens who worshipped at St. John’s.
St. John’s continues to this day to serve as a center for Anglican worship. Changing demographics of Weston has brought many people of the Caribbean and the world to St. John’s. We have opened our doors to a Ghanaian Anglican Congregation and our Korean brothers and sisters in Christ.
St. John’s have a very strong local outreach ministry. We serve a growing number of low – income clientele, offering a hot supper at our weekly Thursday night community supper. We have been doing this every week for over 15 years!! Bi annual Kid’s Clubs attract neighborhood children to a fun program and bible story telling, crafts, games, music and drama. Our programs include a monthly Senior's lunch and entertainment as well as Friday night euchres.
